Honestly, all you need is a pencil, paper, and a bit of patience. Focus on the eyes and hair first, as those are the most distinctive features.
Grab a good art book or look online for some tutorials. I started with Issei since his design is relatively easier compared to others. Trust me, you'll get the hang of it!
Forget tutorials, just trace over a screenshot to get a feel for the lines and then try freehand. It's how I started and really helped me understand the characters' proportions.
