Get yourself a Survival Knife or a Stasis Rifle to fend off those pesky Leviathans and other aggressive creatures. They aren't overly complex, but timing is everything!
Honestly? Just run away. Most creatures can be outswum with a little practice, and it keeps your resources focused on exploration instead of combat.
Some players prefer to just avoid fights altogether. You can outsmart most creatures by using camouflage strategies and not making much noise.
