Make sure your graphics drivers are up to date. A lot of issues come from outdated drivers!
If you're having performance issues, try lowering the graphics settings. Also, make sure you're not running any other heavy applications in the background.
Sometimes mods or custom settings can mess things up. Try running the game with a clean install to see if that helps.
