To get your hands on the vaulting pole (aka the jumping stick), you'll need to talk to Blathers, the owl who runs the museum. After donating enough specimens to him, he'll give you the recipe to craft it. Just gather up some softwood from hitting trees with your axe, and you're good to go!

Actually, it's called a vaulting pole! You get it early in the game by donating fish or bugs to Tom Nook. He'll then call Blathers to the island, who gives you the recipe. Super handy for exploring your island fully.
