Contact the current user and politely ask if they might consider changing their username. It worked for me once; people can be surprisingly accommodating!
Honestly, just get creative and unique! Adding your middle name or initials could do the trick.
Shoot for variations with numbers. If johnsmith is taken, maybe johnsmith123 or johnsmith_99 works?
