You can also unlock characters by completing specific challenges. For example, unlock Jigglypuff by beating Subspace Emissary then completing Event Match 20.

If you're feeling impatient, you can unlock characters by playing lots of Brawls. Most characters unlock after a set number of matches (e.g., Luigi after 22 Brawls).
Honestly, anyone still playing Brawl? Just get Ultimate, it has everyone plus more!
