Get a better axe by exploring more, especially caves. You'll eventually find the Modern Axe which is a great upgrade.
You can upgrade your axe by finding the Modern Axe, usually located in the crates at the Abandoned Campsite, or by crafting a more durable one using bones and cloth.
Honestly, just swap to the Modern Axe ASAP. It's the best thing you'll find for chopping down trees and fighting mutants.
