Honestly, just play the game. You'll unlock characters naturally as you fight. It's more fun that way!
To unlock characters in Super Smash Bros Ultimate, you can play through the 'World of Light' adventure mode, which gradually introduces new fighters as you progress. Or, you can simply play regular matches – a new challenger will appear about every 10 minutes or so! Win the battle, and the character is yours!
Challenge your skills in the 'Challenger's Approach' if you lose a battle against a new character. You can retry and unlock them!
