You could also try downloading your Facebook data. Go to 'Settings & Privacy' > 'Settings' > 'Your Facebook Information' > 'Download Your Information'. You might find your messages there!
Speaking from experience: I once thought I deleted a critical chat, but I found it in my email since I had notifications set up. Check your linked email account!
