I unlocked them all by grinding through versus matches and Classic mode. Took a while, but it was worth it! You can also speed things up with Subspace Emissary mode.
Simple! Just play through the Subspace Emissary (the story mode) and you'll unlock most of 'em. Some characters need you to finish certain tasks like beating Classic mode with specific characters or playing a set number of vs. matches. Good luck!
Just play a ton of matches! Characters unlock after certain numbers of games. Subspace Emissary is the fastest way tho.
