To get hammers in Super Smash Bros Brawl, you just need to play through the Subspace Emissary mode or complete specific challenges. Hammers are used to break open boxes on the Challenge Board for a quick unlock!
First-hand experience here! I found getting hammers was easiest when I tackled the Subspace Emissary mode and knocked out as many challenges as possible. Trust me, it feels great to break open those boxes!
