You can't unlock Master Hand as a playable character in the traditional sense, but with a controller in port 3 and some secret button magic (A + B + Start on 'Name Entry'), you can control him.
Just press A + B + Start at the 'Name Entry' screen while your controller is in port 3. Master Hand unleashed, baby!
To play as Master Hand in Melee, you need to connect a controller to port 3. On the character select screen, hover over 'Name Entry' and press the following: A + B + Start simultaneously. Voil脿, you're now the mighty hand of chaos!
