Just unassign your buddy by going to your buddy's profile and clicking on the little button to swap them out. Easy peasy!

Simply head to the buddy screen and choose another Pokemon. Problem solved!

I had the same issue! Open your buddy's page, tap the 'Swap Buddies' button, and pick a new one. Worked like a charm for me.
