You gotta complete the 'Return of the Mammalians' story mode. Go through all levels and defeat the final boss. Then, voilà, you've unlocked the hero gear!

I went through the single-player campaign and after beating Mr. Grizz, I got the hero gear! Worth every ink splatter!
