How to get the red hat in Super Mario 64?
I remember when I first got the red hat: stand in the castle lobby, look at the light, and then hit the red switch in the secret level to unlock those winged wonders!

You gotta unlock the Wing Cap! Enter the castle lobby and look up towards the light. You'll be taken to the Tower of the Wing Cap stage. Hit the red switch and voila, red hats everywhere!
Just stand in the castle lobby and look up into the light beam. You'll warp to the Wing Cap level and activate the red switch.
A beam of light in the castle lobby? Look up at it! Bam! You'll fly to the Wing Cap course and unlock the red hat.
