I managed to get 4 pets with me by using an alt account and controlling the pets from there. Takes some coordination, though!
To have 4 pets with you in Adopt Me, you need to get a pet through a ride potion or fly potion, and ask three friends to have their pets follow you. You're basically forming a mini-pet parade!
You can only have one pet out at a time. Sorry, but no quad-pet entourage for you!
