To get a buddy, just tap your Trainer's picture, go to the Buddy tab, and then choose a Pokémon to be your buddy. Easy peasy!

First-hand experience here! Open your Trainer Profile, find the 'Buddy' section, and select your desired Pokémon. Your buddy will join you on your adventures!

Tap on your trainer avatar, go to the buddies screen, and pick a Pokemon. Simple as that.
