There isn't really a way to eliminate the down slash completely. Just get better at timing your attacks!
Try using smaller, one-handed weapons like daggers or short swords. They often lack the down slash attack.
Honestly, just practice with different weapons until you find one that suits your no-down-slash needs. Different weapons, different tricks!
