You can hide your online status by going into WhatsApp Settings > Account > Privacy, and setting 'Last Seen' to 'Nobody'. But remember, sneaking around might make your friends think you're a secret agent!
In WhatsApp, head to Settings > Account > Privacy, and change your 'Last Seen' to 'Nobody'. Worked great for me, now I browse in peace!
