In my experience, a private account is the way to go. Only people you accept can see your followers.
Go to your profile, tap the three horizontal lines, hit 'Settings,' then 'Privacy,' and set your account to private. Problem solved!
Just go private. Nobody outside your approved followers can see your follower list.
