Have some traps around your perimeter. Tripwires and mines can really thin out a horde before it reaches your gates.
An upgraded workshop is great for crafting better weapons and explosives, which are crucial for defending against larger zombie attacks.
Don't forget to upgrade your base's walls and gates as soon as you can. Better barriers mean fewer zombies breaching.
Just put everyone with a gun on the walls and shoot anything that moves. Simplicity is key!
