Just hit Shift+Tab to open Steam Overlay, go to Friends, and click 'Invite to Group'. Your friends will get a party invite instantly. Trust me, it works every time!

Pro tip: If your friends are already in-game, type '/inviteme' in the chat. They'll get your request and can add you to their party right away.
