To leave your character at the base, just switch to another character using the community menu, and your previous character will stay behind.

Open the Community tab, pick another character to play as, and your current character will automatically stay at the base. Easy peasy!

In my experience, opening the Community tab and switching characters does the trick. Your character will stay at the base while you take control of someone else.
