Just mine some ores and smelt 'em. Iron and lead are good early game. Get to an anvil and boom, pickaxe!

Honestly, just skip the basic ones and go for a gold or platinum pickaxe as soon as you can. It'll save you so much time.

To make a pickaxe in Terraria, you gotta first gather some basic materials like wood and stone to craft your first simple tools at a workbench. As you progress, you'll need to mine ores like iron or copper to create better pickaxes. Just remember to craft a furnace first to smelt the ores into bars, and then use an anvil for the actual crafting of the pickaxe. Each upgraded pickaxe will let you mine faster and handle tougher materials!
