Quick tip: Make sure you're facing the mailbox directly or else you might end up picking flowers or shaking trees by accident instead. Just point your character towards the mailbox and press 'A'.
Honestly, just hit 'A' when you're near it. If you've played any game before, it's pretty much what you'd expect.
