To open the gates in SSBU, you need to defeat the Guardian spirits that are guarding those gates. Each gate usually has a prerequisite spirit battle you must win!
You can open gates in World of Light by defeating the right spirits. Look around the map for clues on which spirits are connected to which gates.
Just smash those spirit battles guarding the gates! It's all about winning to unlock.
In my experience, you gotta fight and defeat the specific spirits near the gates. Once you beat them, the gates open up.
