Honestly, just add your friend through the Epic Games friends list, invite them to your party, and select Duos. Boom, you're in!
If you're both on the same console, just enable split-screen mode by signing in to a second account and joining the game.
From personal experience, the best way is to invite your friend over, start the game on your console, and enable split-screen. It's more fun to play together in the same room!
