You can't play 2 player on a single console in Splatoon 2. Devs missed a trick there!
To play 2 player in Splatoon 2, you'll need to use the LAN play option or take turns in multiplayer. Unfortunately, there's no split-screen mode for simultaneous play.
You can join your friend's lobby online by using the Nintendo Switch Online service, which means you can both ink the battlefield while having separate devices.
