First, both you and your friend need to be online and in the game. Then, go to the 'Friends' tab in the main menu and select 'Online Multiplayer.' From there, invite your friend to a game and enjoy!

I do this all the time! Go to the Home screen, choose 'Online Multiplayer', then 'Play vs Friends'. Send them an invite and start swinging!
