From experience, I can say that the best way to play with a friend is in a private battle. Just create a room, invite your buddy, and ink it out!
To play Splatoon 2 with two players, you'll both need Nintendo Switch consoles and a copy of the game. Unfortunately, the game doesn't support local split-screen multiplayer, but you can compete online or organize a private battle with friends!
