From my own experience, you should find the GPS locator in your inventory, equip it, and then place it wherever you want on the map. Just make sure it's in a spot you'll remember!
Just mark your map manually; there's no placeable GPS item.
In Sons of the Forest, you can't directly put down a GPS locator. Instead, use your map to mark important spots.
