How to Put Facebook on Private
To make your Facebook private, go to Settings & Privacy > Settings > Privacy Settings and change 'Who can see your future posts?' to 'Friends' or 'Only me'.

You can customize your privacy further by adjusting individual post settings and the audience for past posts in the Privacy Settings.
Just don't post anything! That's the easiest way to stay private on Facebook.
To keep things more private, use Facebook's 'Limit Past Posts' option to change all old public posts to 'Friends'.
