If you've enabled cloud backups (Google Drive for Android or iCloud for iOS), you can reinstall WhatsApp and restore from those backups. Make sure you back up regularly!
No backup? Sorry, but you might be out of luck. WhatsApp itself doesn't store old messages. Make sure you set up backups in the future.
Been there! Had to redownload WhatsApp once and it automatically restored my messages from Google Drive. Just follow the on-screen instructions after reinstalling.
