As a Spyro veteran, I recommend saving right after freeing a dragon. Fairies zap you automatically and save your progress. Trust me, you'll thank me later!

In Spyro 1, you can save your progress by approaching a fairy and letting her zap you when you free a dragon. Zaps are checkpoint saves, or you can also pause the game and choose to 'Save Game' from the menu to ensure your progress is recorded. Happy gliding!
