Basically, avoid making choices where Max gets attacked early on. Keep him safe when playing as Laura and try to get everyone to stick together.

I've played through The Quarry a couple of times. To save Max, keep him from getting infected when you're at the island and make sure he stays alive until the end by swimming to shore.
