Saving PS1 Spyro on a PS2 is easy! Just use a PS1 memory card, as PS2 memory cards won't work for PS1 games. Simply insert the PS1 memory card into your PS2's slot 1 or 2, and save your game like you would on a regular PS1.

Did this all the time back in the day! Make sure you've got a PS1 memory card plugged into your PS2. It's the only way to save Spyro on PS2, trust me!
