You can’t really search levels in the 3DS version since Nintendo didn't include the online search feature. Bit of a bummer, but that's how it is.

In Super Mario Maker 3DS, you can't search for levels directly like in the Wii U or Switch version. You can play recommended levels and courses from a friend via local play or StreetPass!

From my experience, you're stuck with playing the 'Recommended Courses' and sharing levels locally on the 3DS version. No proper online search functionality exists.
