Easy peasy! Just launch your Steam client, click on 'Friends' in the top menu, and then select 'Offline' from the dropdown menu. Voila, you're a ghost!

Pro gamer move: Open Steam, hit Friends & Chat, click your profile pic, and set to 'Invisible'. You can still game and msg, but you'll appear offline. Stealth mode on!
