You actually can't directly sleep in State of Decay to pass the time or heal. Instead, you switch to another character and let the current one rest!
From my experience, you need to rotate your survivors often. Let the sleepy ones rest while you handle the rest with others.
Just switch to another survivor, and the one you're using will get their sleep. Easy peasy!
