First-hand experience here: Connect a second controller, sign in, and join the lobby. My kids do it all the time without a hitch!

Grab a second controller and make sure it's connected to the PS5. Then, have the second player log into their PSN account. Go to the lobby in Fortnite and press X to join the party. Boom! Split screen activated.
