You can change your character in Tales of Arise by pressing 'Q' or 'E' during battle. Outside combat, go to the menu, find your party, and select the character you want to control!
Just mash F1 during a fight. You'll be the character you want faster than you can say 'Mystic Arte!'
From personal experience: Head to the party menu by pressing 'ESC,' then navigate to the party screen and select your favorite character. Voila!
