Unfortunately, it's near impossible to sync a PS3 controller without a USB cable if it's never been paired with the console before. Time to dig up that old USB cable!

From personal experience, you gotta initiate the sync with a USB cable first. Once it's paired, it can connect wirelessly. So, find any mini-USB cable and plug it in!
