I found targeting the engines super effective when zooming and using ship maneuvering thrusters to get behind enemy ships. Then it's all pew-pew, and their engines go kaput!
You need to selectively aim at the rear of enemy ships where the engines are typically located. With practice, you'll be outmaneuvering and disabling ships left and right.
Honestly? Just shoot at stuff until it stops moving. Works for me!
