Deleting your account is overkill. Just deactivate it.
I deleted my account a few months back. Just head to Settings > Your Facebook Information > Deactivation and Deletion, click Delete, and follow the steps. You'll need to re-enter your password and verify it's you. Easy peasy!
Just go to Settings > Your Facebook Information > Deactivation and Deletion, then choose Delete Account. It's that simple.
