How to Turn on Visual Footsteps in Fortnite

I turned on visual footsteps from the Audio settings menu, and it made a huge difference in detecting enemies. Highly recommend it!

Visualize Sound Effects on = visual footsteps! Found in the Audio settings.

Head to your settings menu, go to the Audio tab, then toggle 'Visualize Sound Effects' to on. Boom! You're good to go.
