I unlocked Bowser Jr. yesterday by playing Classic Mode with Mario on difficulty 6.5. It was tough but totally worth it!

You can unlock Bowser Jr. by playing through Classic Mode with any character on at least Intensity 6.0 or higher. Good luck!
