To unlock characters in Super Smash Bros Brawl, you can either complete specific challenges in the Subspace Emissary mode or meet various criteria in Classic mode, All-Star mode, and other multiplayer challenges. Each character has a different requirement, like beating Classic mode with a certain character or playing a certain number of vs. matches.

Play 10 brawls or more to unlock Ness; 20 for Marth, 30 for Luigi, and so on. It's a grind, but you'll get there!

Honestly, just spam those vs. mode matches if you want to unlock everyone quickly. Each milestone fight brings a new challenger!

Just play through the Subspace Emissary story mode to unlock a majority of the characters! Nice and simple.
