You can also unlock characters by simply playing multiplayer matches. The more you play, the more challengers you'll face!
From my own experience, I found the fastest way to unlock characters is by playing Classic Mode repeatedly with different characters. Plus, it's a ton of fun smashing through those nostalgic battles!
