There's a trick where you reset the game after each character unlock. Play a match, unlock a character, then reset the game to bypass timers.
The quickest way is to play through Classic Mode. Each completed run guarantees a character unlock, and it's pretty fun too!
Use the World of Light Adventure mode. You can unlock characters by defeating them in the story, but it's slower than the other methods.
