Experienced explorer here! When your backpack gets too full, transfer your surplus gear to your ship's cargo hold. It saved me from many sticky situations. Just make sure you're not carrying Valuables, they don't fit well in there.
Cargo holds? Just drag your stuff there in the game's menu. Easy peasy.
Just clicked around in the ship menu until I found it. Not the most exciting answer, but it worked!
